We had a C30 D5 Auto from new a few years ago, in many ways a fantastic car apart from the 'total pants' auto box that saw us selling the car after 18 months and losing a shed load of money. We didn't have a chance to test drive a D5 or Auto but spent a day in a 2.0d which we loved and had great expectations for our D5. What a let down - the gear box was so slow and unwilling to lock up! Also, economy was very poor for a diesel. I think you have probably had your concerns over the Auto confirmed, but here is another vote against.

cheers for the response, that does sort of confirm the fears on the auto boxes not being any different to the s60 ones, theres a d5 at a car supermarket nearby so might see if i can blag a long test drive with it, its not the right spec for what I'm looking for but will give me a damn good idea to what im getting in for

and a bit of a chew to fit. Bumper off and front cross member needs to be removed - took about 4 hours in total & Cost me £30 to get it re filled

Other than that it's the best car we've owned. Take away the tweed jacket image - the build quality is superb.

The D5 makes a lovely sound.

We went for the D5 simply because its a well proven engine (like the VAG 1.9)
lots of grunt and already comes with big brakes and twin exhaust

Been to germany in ours and its like an old slipper. Comfy and reliable.
thats a definate plus then for the d5, there will be a load of friends and I doing a euro tour next summer, so a comfy long distance cruiser would be ideal
