Default Engine temp dropped while in traffic

So, today was a cold morning - -4c when I left for work. My journey is about 13 miles and I hit the first bit of traffic at about halfway. The car was up to temp at that time but in the 15 minutes of slow crawl, the temp dropped from midway to the 2nd mark above min.

I don't think this can possibly be normal and I've never had a car do that before. When I got going again the temp started to rise although it never quite made it back to midway on the gauge.

This is on a 2012 V50 DRIVe.

Anyone else seen this before I speak to the dealer.

There is quite a complex thermostatic circuit on these so that the car warms up as quickly as possible so best let the dealer sort it , but it could be difficult for them to reproduce .

Booked in for this Wednesday so will see what they find. Doing a search online reveals that the 2.0 TDCI engine has 2 thermostats and failure of one of them results in the symptoms I'm seeing. Not sure of the 1.6D has this set up too

Will report back on Wed.

Hoping that they can also sort some rattles while it's in. Very disappointed that some of these have appeared after only 8k. I had a 325i Touring that was pretty much rattle free at 127k when I sold it.

Thermostat replaced although the service manager didn't know if there was more than one. Will keep an eye on it and see if my mpg improves from the current 45 average
