Used Volvo for Sale with "Anti skid service required".
Hello,
I'm thinking about buying a 2005 Volvo S40 however I can see the following error on the dash...."anti skid required service" The dealer didn't tell me it was anything to worry about but it was only when I googled that I realized it could be an expensive ABS problem to fix ! Anyway, I told him about this and he brought it to a mechanic who said there was a problem with one of the brake sensors which needs replacing. I'm a little worried that: a) He's just going to get his mechanic to clear it. b) He'll replace it and something else will go wrong with the ABS so back to square one again. I'd really appreciate it it anyone could share their experience or provide some advice ? Thanks in advance ! M. |

I think every owner of Volvo seen this message at least once! That an error message doesn't necessarily mean abs problems! Without connecting to DICE nothing can be 100%! For example, I had got that message on when one plastic intercooler pipe cracked. That was nothing wrong with abs system at all! If trader will rectify problem I would still buy it! After repair take car for a spin, if possible try to go over 80mph! Ideally connect a car to the DICE to check that nothing wrong with a car! I hope this will help!
Good luck. |

As above as long as the garage sort it I wouldn't have an issue purchasing the car, if you want extra piece of mind you could always try and get then to chuck in a few months warrenty.....

It's a pretty common problem on both the S40 and V50 of this era, it can turn out to be something simpler but more often than not it is the actual ABS unit itself that needs replacing. This is about an £850 job from a dealer or there is a place than can recon your old one for £200 to £250.
If the garage is paying then I'd be pushing for them to replace with a brand new one as opposed to recon if indeed the ABS unit is at fault. |

Thanks everyone :-) One more question, would you go for a 2004 or a 2005 model S40 ? Looking at a 2004 sports model too.

Depends if the 2004 is the new shape or not i had a 2001 s40 t4 and i currently have a 2005 s40 t5 and whilst i loved the t4 i much prefer the interior and styling of the t5, and the 5 cylinder growl is addictive :-)
