Default Towing with a Volvo XC60 D5 R Design auto

Hi All
I am toying with the idea of a 2016 XC R Design for towing a 1450kg Bailey.
I have seen a few negative comments about the RD, mainly regarding the stiffer suspension and also problems of fitting a tow bar. Would I be better off with a standard 2.4 D4 or D5?
Any advice greatly appreciated

I haven't towed with an XC , but I have towed with a VW Tiguan AWD 2L D, and now tow with a V70 D5 auto. I found towing with the V70 much more stable, with far less risk of any fishtailing. Towing with a car which is higher off the road definitely made my rig less stable and the V70 is a much more enjoyable car to tow with. That's been my experience of it, the auto box is also a big boon for me for towing, it gives you more time to concentrate on the road and not the gears and I wouldn't choose to go back to manual towing now. I can only speak from my own personal experience, but the V70 is ideal for towing caravans, my rig is a bit lighter at around 1300Kg but 1450kg would not be a problem for this car.

I tow a 1700kg caravan with my XC60 with absolutely no problems.

As you say there may be problems fitting a Towbar to the RD and the stiffer suspension might be a problem.

My uncle has a XC60 and the manual says put the car into dynamic mode for towing, that stiffens the suspension so I don't know why a Rdesign would be any different.
I have a V70 Rdesign and I like the stiff suspension as it doesn't move around a lot and keeps the car quite level with the caravan attached.
As for towbars a few say not compatible with Rdesign but there is usually an alternative that fits.

Just to clarify, small changes in tow ball height can be critical on twin axle caravans and trailers... much less so on single axle.

If you can find one - an XC60 with the 4C adjustable dampers covers all bases.
