Default Loss of power, Cut out won’t start 😭

Hi All,

New to the Volvo forums and on here looking for some advice and information.

Our vehicle: XC90 Mk2 2017 2.0L Diesel D4 (235hp) R-Design

So, my wife was on motorway, cruise control, 70mph and suddenly a loss of power and had to pull over where engine cut out. Managed to restart briefly and moved car to aid recovery. Engine cranks over but doesn’t start. Recovered to home but recovery guy pulled the codes.

This is what we had in the system:

P229000 - Injector Control Pressure (ICP) too low,General fault information, No
sub-type information

P22907B - Injector Control Pressure (ICP) too low,Mechanical faults,Low fluid
level

P133009 - Injector Control Pressure (IP) lower than desired (engine
running), General fault information, Component faults

P000400 - Fuel volume control valve circuit high, General fault information, No sub-
type information

So, as you can see possible injector fault, but trying to eliminate the mega expensive High Pressure Fuel pump (HPFP) 😵*💫

I have checked the fuel flow from the tank pump, checked the flow before the fuel filter, after the filter and at the HPFP. All the flows are equal so no leaks or blockages.
Now here’s the worry, the fuel pressure on the HP fuel rail (under cranking conditions) is 45psi. I can see this via the OBD2 app. I have also had a pressure gauge directly on the HPFP outlet and it recorded 45psi.

Does anyone know what the fuel rail pressure should be under cranking and normal idle? Can’t find any info anywhere!

Can anyone confirm the location of the fuel pressure sensor and flow control valve? I think the control valve is on the common fuel rail and the pressure sensor on the HIgh pressure pump.

Do the injectors have fuel pressure sensors in them?

Hope someone can shed some light.

Oh, I have checked all the fuses and all ok.

After my experience, I have a paranoia for fuel filter trouble!

I hope it’s that simple.🤔

Changed the filter and still no success.

I have done a injector leak off test and none of the injectors were leaking off.

Does anyone know about the fuel flow control valve? Does that stay shut unless signalled to pulse to control pressure. I’m wondering if the control valve is stuck closed and not getting fuel to the fuel rail.

Will do a few more checks tomorrow. I’ll do a flow test from the High pressure pump and then the same test but this time from a fuel line to an injector. If I get fuel at pump but not at injector, then the control valve must be closed!? Agree???

Anyone?

Hi M8

Dont know if this may help or not but worth a try maybe.

Just had similar fault on mine but mine is Mk1 XC90 My08...

Kept cutting out for no reason (twice on motorway bloody dangerous),leave for 10 minutes and fired up as if nothing was ever wrong ...same injector faults as yours came up at my indies garage when I eventually got it there.

Faults were cleared but came up after a couple of drives again....long story short turned out to be nothing to do with the injectors but a failing crank sensor which did not register as a fault... it seems that it confuses the ECU and makes it tell lies...

£30.00 item plus labour cured it .....Worth a try???

Mines been fine ever since.

Hope this helps

I had this problem and a significant observation is that when cranking, the tacho never moves. It appears this is where the tacho also gets it's signal.

Just simple cranking should give some movement on the tacho needlle.

In my case the sensor was loose and it had slowly ground away the end until it failed.

Certainly worth a try but my '03' threw an error code.

Hello!
I have the same problem in my V40 D2 2.0 2017
Filter changed, low preasure from tnak electric pump OK
No preasure from mechanical high preasure pump to injectors.

Have you solved the problem?
The problem was the pump, valve, solenoid, ECM???
I am stuck here...
Thank you

Default Volvo V40 D2 2.0 Diesel

I have the same problem in my V40 D2 2.0 2017

Diesel filter changed (is below the fuel tank), my car have an electric diesel pump in the fuel tank that provides low fuel pressure from tank to high pressure pump in the engine, this electric pump is working. I suppose it provides enough pressure to fill the new filter and fuel line up to the mechanical high pressure pump, since I have opened the line that goes to it and there is diesel on it and no air already.

I have no pressure from mechanical high pressure pump to injectors.
Tried to crank with a little of ether and engine runs, so timming is Ok and the engine with the correct fuel pressure suppose to work.
Fuses on engine bay are all good.
I have opened the upper cap of the HP pump and when the engine cranks it comes fuel out from the fuel return holes (low pressure), but no fuel at all to the line that goes to the injectors (no high pressure).

Test the coil in the pump and it works when providing external power (tried with 5V to test and it works).

Any ideas about what can be the problem?

Clogged pump, or dirt inside, or something else with the pump? (don't want to remove it yet since the belt is connected to the timming.)
Preasure valve or solenoids, ECM???

Thank you
