Default Banded 8 Spoke Steelies?

Looking at some options for some winter wheels as it's coming into the winter season. Of course the plague of the 5x108 means there's no cool looking 8 Spoke steels or there. The only option that's left is to use adapters but I'm really unsure about them as I'm doing all of this for the first time. Can anyone punt me in the right direction? Thank you!

If it's for winter wheels and you are going to fit winter tyres then you don't want a wide contact patch as it will be even worse in snow and ice, you will be best off with standard steels or if you must have to bigger wheels then Citroen 17" steel wheels (spare wheel only) will fit and looks quite nice, MiniNinkaRob has them on and will probably be along shortly with a photo if you want.

I know there are some marginal technical benefits to using steel wheels in winter but personally I’ve never had a problem with Michelin Alpins fitted to alloy wheels on the 940.

Photos are tricky as I left photobucket and don’t have them hosted anywhere yet.

It all depends what size wheels you want - 15/16/17?

Like Luke said, the narrower the better in general for winter wheels. The ideal combination if you can find it is a set of wheels from the 140 series with 165/15 tyres on.

Wider tyres simply compact the snow/ice then slip, melting the top surface which then refreezes to create something even more slippery. Narrower tyres cut through and reach the road easier, giving more traction. Strange but true!

Whatever you go for, get the narrowest tyre you can on the rim you've got, with wide rims like the 6, 6.5 and 7J you'll be hard pushed to safely fit a 165 which means on the wider rims you'll have to go wider but try to maintain a higher profile on the tyres, for example a 175/70/15 rather than a 195/60/15 would be better.

It may be worth sacrificing wheel diameter in favour of narrower tyres and higher profiles.

I don't know what I was thinking but I've remembered I can just use the current wheels as my winter wheels. However I'd still love to find some 8 Spoke steels as that simple style is so appealing to me, something similar to this:

Of course I'll never find the right PCD but again I'm unsure on how to fit adapters without running into issues

All of those are 5 x 108 PCD, you'll need to check the centre bore (CB) and offset to make sure you either get wheels that will fit straight on or you only need some spigot bushes to centralise the wheels once fitted. Wheel spacers can help with small offsets, after that you're into hubcentric spacers. That information comes from :

https://www.carlsalter.com/wheel_fitments.html

It has different ways of searching for what you're after and if you look up your car to start with, you can then cross-check your options to see what will fit with the minimum of fuss.

https://www.carlsalter.com/volvo-wheel-fitments.html

If you have an early 940, it's 5 x 108 PCD, 65 CB and 15-25 offset. That said it lists 2 or 3 different lots of figures for the 7xx, 9xx and 7&9 series, not including the last of the 960s which had a 35-45mm offset.

I can see the attraction of the Weller 8-spokes for normal use but in winter i think i'd be more interested in practicality than looks.

I'm guessing you're using adapters too? Are they 7Jx17? Which Citroen are they from? C5? I'm in the market too for winter wheels.

No adaptors needed. They were spare wheels from a C6 (well 4 of them), 7Jx17. Only needed a 5 mm spacer on the front to clear the struts, PCD and inner diameters were identical.

If I ever did different wheels again I’d fit adaptors so I could have some 3 spoke Advans.

Cheers! Ordered a set of 4, I'll get them wrapped in some Nokian winter tyres.
