Amusingly it let off a cloud of smoke in their carpark after the test but they'd left it idling a long time and it idles too slow and was clearly objecting!

1993 and a mere 169k. (just loosening up)

If memory serves, yours is the B200F Vicky? In which case, according to Marks very useful chart, it should be 775rpm. First thought is that the idle switch isn't making on the throttle body. Easy to check, engine off and pull the throttle cable to open the throttle gently. As you pull it, you should hear a click as the microswitch opens, as you let it back (still gently) you should hear the same microswitch click as it closes.

Someone may have overtightened the throttle cable when adjusting it so check that first, should be a little slack in it at idle position. If not, adjust it to give a small amount of slack and you may even hear the microswitch click as you do it. If so, start it and let it warm up and check the idle speed, should be nearer what it should idle at.

Also check in the area of your coolant expansion tank, should be a white/red wire there on a 2-pole connector with only one wire going into it. Check to make sure nobody has left a piece of wire in here to earth. This disables the AICV which alters the idle speed.

After that there's a few more things to check if those steps don't get the idle speed where it should be.

This is great Dave, thanks. Yes 775 sounds more like it as at 800ish it's clearly happier and not making any near death noises

Battery tray on my 940 was rotten when I bought it in 2005 with 100,000 recorded miles. At that time there were quite a few 940s in local breakers so I was able to cut a good one from a breaker and bolted into mine.

Default Idle too low

I've had to ignore the 940 for a bit however it has recently had new discs/pads and again I am trying and failing to resolve the low tick over. There is no click, cable has some slack. No white/red wire near the coolant tank either. Given there is no click it would seem the microswitch is defective? I was guarded against changed the throttle tension by local garage, they said 600 was ok until they left it idling for so long it let off a cloud of black smoke when they decided to move it....so I'm back to the drawing board if anyone has any more ideas, thanks!

Sounds like you need to adjust the TPS Vicky.

If you're not sure, let me know and i'll type it out for you, at the moment my head is thinking of too many other thinggs to make it sensible but i can do it later.
