If they're OE then the chances are they are in there to perform some sort of sound deadening function or similar. If you can get a photo it might help as some air filter elements had an extra foam layer on them and that was prone to disintegrating so it could be it's bits of that from the past that have become stuck with dirt.

Just done this lot today,
Pulled fuse 1, Fitted new air filter. Fitted 4 new NGK BPR6ES gapped at 30 thou old money. Fitted new Lambda sensor. Checked for leaks on vacuum pipes, replaced one to turbo. Remove dizzy and rotor arm, clean contacts and re-fit. Remove and clean MAF sensor, re-fit. Put Forte advanced fuel treatment in tank and topped up petrol. Remove rear exhaust box and tailpipe, seal with exhaust paste and re-fit. Check TPS is clicking on throttle cable return, yes it is. The sponge I mentioned earlier was removed and cleaned, it is not a secondary air filter but more of a resonance guard I think to prevent induction noise, the lid of the filter box is almost lined with foam which is intact. Got some pictures which I will load later. Re-test is at 5 tonight, I will let you all know as soon as |

Failed..........
Fast idle test 0.60 limit 0.30 Second test 0.41 limit 0.30 Fair play to the guys they did try their best but to no avail, a fail is a fail. The only thing we did notice was a slight misfire still at the exhaust, not sure if that is the problem but I am going to put a set of leads on it as a last resort, after that I have no idea to be honest. |

Getting on a bit
|
I was told this many years ago by an old school mechanic and have used it once to get it thru an emission test that I only just failed, He advised me to put band new oil and filter on the day before I took the car for a mot, his theory is that old oil becomes thinner and smelly with age and if just a little gets passed the piston rings and out thru the exhaust it can add to the emission count, worth a try, did work for me, good luck

The cause has surely got to be in the reason for the continuing 'slight misfire'.
Can't actually readily see you have changed the plug leads (changed a few years ago), or even the coil. I won't go into the the ignition amplifier, or its plug contacts! Best of luck!! Bob |

Oil and filter were done a couple of weeks ago. I also drove it like i stole it on the way to the test, 5 times up the Rhyl bypass.

Car is 1993, I will clean up the PCV system over Easter and order some leads, I did replace them a few years ago but at £24 a set at ECP they are worth a go. I have noticed s smelly exhaust so am even considering putting a cat on.
