Default XC70 2002 Dim lights on dash, gauges not working

Hi all,

First post here!

We recently bought a 2002 Volvo XC70, The lights on the instrument cluster are extremely dim, barely lit at all, and all the gauges, speedometer, fuel etc are not registering at all, We've tried changing the fuse, unplugging and replugging the battery, and removing the dashboard entirely and plugging it all back in.

Thanks for any help, looking at perhaps replacing the whole instrument cluster at this point.

welcome, and have a word with https://volvodiagnostic.com/p2-platf...im-repair.html who can do repairs

assuming it's not just that the dash lighting dimmer dial is set to minimum ?

Thank you, I'll check them out, definitely looks helpful.

Unfortunately, its not the dimmer as the guages dont work as well, looks like most of the bulbs have blown at some point on the DIM as well.

A possible power surge or something at some point?

others may be able to confirm but it's possible you might be able to replace the lamps yourself? I'd double check that first

maybe drop them an email first and detail the issue they can confirm if actual repairs are required

Older style clusters' failing is common. My 2002's began failing around 170,000 miles.
The symptoms of which dead gauges, dead message screen etc. vary.

The blue "high beam" indicator operating inconsistently is a common first sign as is the clock's digits running at a wild blur.

Removal of the cluster for repair is straightforward.
The vehicle can be driven without the cluster but I don't know if that's legal.
How many miles were on your car when you got it?

Bulb replacement kits are available.
from old notes.

5 black = 3W w/holder #9472109
4 Grey = 2W w/holder #9472110

Thanks all, extremely helpful, it sounds like the cluster is dead in the water, I’ll chat with Volvo Diagnostics next, see about getting it replaced/repaired.

Thanks again.
