If only you could find the real reason with proof of the cat C then feelings may change. It's still a fantastic looking car and may have only been cat c as described above.minor paint damage or similare? Not sure if you can find out the info but as it's a really nice car then surely it's worth trying to find out. Regards Brian. |

Hats off and thanks to Keir for being open, honest and doing the decent thing by removing the car from sale. Sadly, thanks to a minority of dodgy characters, the motor trade in general doesn't always have the best of reputations. I hope that further investigations can somehow clear this up, and that the car eventually goes to an enthusiast and Keir gets a fair price. Cheers Jack |

I'm looking for an immaculate 240 myself. Must be a GLT, prefer a manual. Though I realise getting a time warp one is no mean feat. Had spoken to Keir about this 240 but when questionned he did say it had seen paint down both sides of the car, which for me was disappointing, whether it was recorded or not. The car obviously still has value (Cat c at 10+ yrs old wouldnt take much!), perhaps he is no longer selling the car as there is now no profit in it? Pity, as if its fixed right its still appear to be a fantastic car. |

I'm with Lanky Tim on this. A Cat C on a 240 means nothing. Mine's got TWO cat C's and it has no effect on the car.
Also, with regards to the AW70 (which this car has), they're almost bullet proof! Don't be put off selling this still but be open about what's happened to it.

Using the DVLA website it should be possible to check things like the last time a V5C was issued etc. Is there any way in which the previous owner's family could be asked about the accident in 2002? (I think the actual owner had died, so that bit will need a diplomatic approach!). If the car was without 'history' it'd be worth £1500 - from the comments earlier in the thread that sort of value was reasonable, and there's a very handsome white GLT auto (61,000), one owner, on Ebay right now at £1270 with one day to go. With no more history than this silver car apparently has just now, I guess no-one is going to want to chance much more than a few hundred pounds for it. If the history can be satisfactorily clarified then the value of this car is going to be somewhere between £250 and £1200. Anyone any idea how much a proper inspection and report would cost? I did a quick web search but the firms I found won't quote on a car over 15 years old! Is the VOC 240 Register Keeper able to comment or advise at all? I think that a few VOC members (me included) have contributed to this thread - and surely the VOC is all about helping people who want to keep older Volvos on the road. Cheers Jack |

If I were looking at this car with a view to buying it I would keep in mind the Cat C listed and go looking for what happened.
Even a well fixed car will give a few clues to what has gone on. If it's been repaired so well you can't tell then It probably isn't anything to worry about. I looked at a similar car to this a while ago and that was silver. It had been painted on the lower half and you could see where the join was done along the side stripe. There was also a bit of rust starting on the bottom of the doors, another reason for a respray perhaps ? I'd start with the front wings and areas where they fit the car for signs of removal, check the door edges for masking lines and check the inside of the boot if possible, inner rear wings and boot floor. Look out for any bits of trim that look new (not easy if the car has been looked after) a tey car indicate areas that have been repaired. If the car has had a pair of front wings and front panel for example it might be in better condition than an original car, if it's been done properly. |

Just think, a car could be badly damaged the day it left the showroom and not be written off by the insurers because its so new. It could them be poorly repaired by a bad bodyshop and live the rest of its life with subsequent owners none the wiser.
I recon this 240 will be as good as it looks provided the buyer has a good look around it. Aslong as the boot floor isn't all crumpled or similar then I say go for it. It's a shame its got a CAT C marker on it but It's only really a problem if you make it a problem.
