Default V50 2.0D vs 2.4D help needed! First time volvo buyer.

Hey guys!

To cut a long story short which is the better engine? Im in the process of buying a V50 as my wife is now pregnant and i need an estate. My current car is a BMW 320d m sport saloon just for reference. Iv always been keen on the look of the R design V50 and they seem to offer alot of bang for your buck. My price range leads me to either the 2.0D or the 2.4D in Automatic with roughly 100k on the clock. I was a little concerned with hearing they use some ford engines? I may be wrong though, just never thought of a high mileage focus as a reliable car to purchase? So if anyone could shed light on either engines in terms of reliability etc it would be hugely appreciated! Fuel consumption isnt too much of an issue for me as the company pay for fuel. Thanks for your time, Sam

id go for the 2.4D, if mpg isnt much of a concern id look towards the petrols engines.

The 2.4D5 is a five cylinder Volvo engine whereas the 4 cylinder 2.0D is a Ford/PSA engine.

If you are looking at an automatic the D5 has a conventional torque converter automatic gearbox and the 2.0D has a twin clutch Ford powershift transmission.

I would go with the D5 but if you are looking at a car with around 100k miles then I think the cambelt is due for replacement around this mileage.

If you do a search on the C30/S40/V50 forum I think someone posted a buyers guide to the V50.

D3 would be my choice, lovely engine and much smoother than the D5, auto seems to cope well with this combination. 2.0D is fine, but avoid the power shift auto box fitted the 2.0D - that can be a bit troublesome and expensive to put right... Most are reliable, it's just the one that's not will leave a sink hole sized dent in your wallet!

Please do not touch the power shift cars, endless stories of problems with them.

I have the 2.0d manual, if I had the money at the time I would've bought the 2.4d.

Thanks for all your replys guys! Its very much appreciated! Right so it looks like i will get the D5 2.4d engine with auto box. Do these have this terrible powershift box or just the 2.0d? Thanks again!

Only the 2.0D has powershift transmission.

2.4D is conventional torque converter automatic transmission.

As said, if mpg, tax and insurance aren't a concern choose either.
All this talk of Ford engine and crap powershift is nonsense.
The engine is a PSA and basically a Peugeot . The PS box is lovely if not thrashed and maintained, like anything else on any car.

100k power**** box I wouldn't gamble my money on it, you only have to read up about the endless problems with them and car is scrap if it goes wrong, the 2.0d DPF and eyolys is bad enough on these cars. It seems these cars are pot luck, some go for a longtime others don't.
To the op just do a lot of research read up, 2.4d auto or manual is the way to go. Just make sure the car if 100k has had the DPF and tank filled if it has them.
