Default Retro-fit Air Conditioning.

Hi folks,

I love my 740, (1991 744 2.0 (B200F) GL Auto) but I really miss the A/C in my last car. You'll probably think I'm mad, but I was wondering whether A/C could be fitted from parts from a 940 or 760 to my car?

I plan on keeping my 740 for a while, and thought that if I did the easy bits, I could let a mechanic do anything too tricky. I know it would be time consuming, but could it be done, and what would be involved? Also, what parts would I need?

Many thanks,
John.

P.S. - I'm not crazy!

Hi,

It would be cheaper to buy another car, same vintage and model that had AirCon fitted.

Opening your windows will drop your economy by about 10%!!
Works great when warm though..

I think changing the dash for an aircon 1 would be be the biggest job, theres a 90 760 on my drive that i'm dismantling for parts if you want anything, i don't want anything for any of the aircon bit's as i'm happy with my gle the way it is, if it's cost effective for you to come to the west midlands you could get pretty much the lot in 1 go, regards les.

Hmm lancasters quite a way away.

Hi Les,

That's a very kind offer - what engine does your 760 have? If I could get the A/C controls from a 940, I shouldn't have to change the dash, should I? I'm very tempted to pop down!

Hi,

Just to let you know, there is little difference in the components for AirCon between my V90 and my 940..

This could well be done as I think little has been/is changed on the basic system for these..

I was thinking of just using the basic A/C system, without the climate control function. I have a control panel from a 940 for the A/C, so I just need all the mechanical components. If I could come down, Les, would you know which parts I would need? This is completely new to me!

Thanks,
John.

Back on topic, Id love to fit A/C to mine, and i have bought up the topic of retro-fitting it a few times.

The general concensus being, that its easier to do without, as regassing charges and maintenance, can add up to silly amounts of money.

That said, my current 740 is so good, id be loathed to get rid of it for a 7/940 with aircon.

If it turns out its not so hard, its something i might consider also.
