It what our trusted Indy does, albeit with their EDT machine.

Just undo the bolt and let it drain without running then engine. You should get around 3 litres. Refill the same amount and then drive the car 10 miles at least and then repeat. Doing that 3 times will get you to 85-90% new fluid.

When done, check the level by removing the centre plug of the drain plug with the car level and engine running with gearbox warm, allow the excess to drain out, refit the centre plug. If nothing comes out then add 1/2 litre and repeat.

Your 2012 car uses AW-1 / jws3324 spec juice…..
Hi Tannaton, thanks for the info but you have thrown a bit of a spanner in the works for me there as I used JWS 3309 as per the Haynes manual I was using, is it likely to cause problems?

Cheers

That has been the subject of a number of discussions. Worth a search. If you want an option from the trade, then Graham (Horton Cars) linked above has an excellent reputation as someone who knows these 'boxes backwards, and is always ready to offer advice, even if he won't see your car.

No….

3309 was used on the earlier models, the change to 3324 was for economy reasons and longer life (3324 is fully synthetic).

Other opinions are, I know available*, but OP should do his own DD on this, as I suggested. There are full synth 3309s, for instance (Mannol, off the top of my head).

*There are those who believe that 3309 is forward compatible, but 3324 isn't reverse compatible.

Here's the detail.....

Volvo changed the spec of transmission fluid from JWS3309 to JWS3324 (AW-1) from and including MY2010 when the TF80 Gen 2 was used with the exception of the XC90 which wasn't changed until 2013MY. However, at some point latterly, Volvo revised their stance on it and now specify JWS3324 for XC90 from ~2010/2011MY (VIN number ending in 568000 onwards).

Hence there is now a situation where Volvo would say, and dealers would use a different fluid to that which is specified in the original owners manual, and this invariably means filling a box which had 3309 in it with 3324.

My experience is both are compatible with both versions of the TF80, but I read that you should avoid using a mix (i.e. do full changes if your moving from one to the other).

So if the OP reads his owners manual and he has a 2012MY car (i.e. built before July 2012) it will say JWS3309. If it's a 2013MY car (built after July) it will say JWS3324. But if he takes it into Volvo, or buys fluid from a dealer matched to his chassis number, as a post 2010MY car he'll get JWS3324 regardless of what was in there to start with.

Attached is the label on the genuine Volvo JWS3324 trans fluid.

So OP, between us I hope we've made that sufficiently clear?

That is very thorough and useful information and has put my mind at ease for using JWS3309. Thank you for taking the time to help.
