Got my caliper sorted (on Tuesday afternoon), hasn't leaked again since. Tightened my handbrake this morning for the braking test just for good measure. MOT retest at 11:30, wish me luck

Hows the retest go?
Think I need to get my brakes bled (might be a little air in the system), not as good as on the diesel and the handbrake's binding slightly.

It passed, all good

Handbrake binding is normally the mechanism on the rear calipers, try loosening off the nut that holds the cable arm a tiny bit, then a good dose of WD. Have a look through this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=109801

Cool

Looked into the back and it's full of boxes of firewood, so I guess winter is still not over.
Got a pair of new Jerrybay rear door struts and a furry seat cover (Half a lamb) in the post.
I'm probably going to get into an argument later about which car to fit the seat cover to. It might have to go on the Twingo if she does not like the feel of it on her stern section, or the colour does not match.

They are reconditioned calipers, I think both on the rear are. This was something that was done before I got the car and given the silly little jobs that I've done to rectify problems, doesn't leave me with much faith in the people that did work on this car before I got it. But still something to check out. Thanks.

Tackled my snapped bonnet release today.

Points of note
  • The bolts holding the bonnet mechanism are thread locked in. Plenty of oil and back and forthing to get them out.
  • You will drop your 10mm socket and universal joint down between the top of the metal bumper and the plastic bumper.
  • Put a long cable tie or piece of wire around the plastic across the front of the lock and pull, it will come off.
  • I had to get the left hand bit of the lock pulled forward and the right handed section rotated down a bit to get it out.
  • Other than that it its a case of brute force and wiggling it.
  • Use soft handled pliers or screwdrivers to jam between the bonnet and the bumper to save your fingers.
  • The third bolt is behind a bit of plastic which you have to lean out the way. You also need to lean it out the way to get the lock out.

Once I got the bonnet open I was able to have a look at the acceleration/power loss problem.
All the vac hoses seem intact.
Whether this is right or not the turbo has vacuum even at idle. If I disconnect the vac pipe to the turbo the problem goes away but I have very little boost obviously.
With the vac pipe connected the car dies back sort of rhythmically and smokes a lot.

Sticky 'handbrake' is another common fault on the x40, lots of people on here have had it. I'm sure someone said (Matt86?) you can't get the bits for the caliper handbrake mechanism so don't be surprised if that was left off the list
