Default 740 Dash Testing?

Is there anyway of testing an instrument cluster off a car? The one I have just bought is the wrong type for my car, but I was told everything worked on it, before I sell it on I want to double check it is a working item.
It is the type with the separate numbers on the tripmeter.

Would be grateful if anyone has any ideas?

Many thanks

Andy

It is the type on the right:

Hi Andy .... sorry to say no, it's not simple really with either the VDO or the Yazaki units. For ease, you really need the right compatible loom, or the capability to input (in the right place) the basic sensor electronic signals to the dials and all that goes with that .... of course unless someone else know different ..... good news on the shocks front what did you get? Bob.

One thing to watch with the clusters on these cars is the number of pins within the connector that goes to the speedo, some have three wires, others have four (I think from memory).
You can swap the cluster but to get the speedo to read correctly would also require you to swap out the pulse wheel within the rear axle diff as the number of teeth per revolution was significantly different between the two types fitted to cars - Mike

Thanks again guys, as usual, a wealth of knowledge and I am very grateful. Looks like I will just have to sell it on and let people know i'm not sure if it works!
