Default 5w/30

There seem to be so many oils on the market and such a variance in price!

Can anyone recommend a decent 5w/30 oil at a decent price? Is it safe to safe you pay for what you get or is oil another of the many rip offs we seem to be acustomed too these days?

Am i correct in thinking that if it meets WSS-M2C913-B spec it will be ok for use in my 2.0d 65k inter service?

WSS-M2C913-B spec is a semi-synthetic 5W-30, not a mineral or full synthetic oil. If the oil meets that standard, you will be OK. Most of the oil majors and specialist oil blenders will produce this spec. Halfords oil is as good as any. My own preference is for ***hs oil but its not widely available.
If you shorten your service intervals, you can use mineral. Like wise, if you lengthen, use fully synthetic oils.

I've been using Castrol until last service where I used Halfords as it was £10 cheaper with an extra litre.

Castrol oil is (or was Commer).
It doesn't matter, as long as it meets the spec as per the label under the bonnet.

In my opinion it is not worth running with full synth oil because it will be changed fairly regularly (12k) and anyway, I've not seen any Ford spec/viscocity fully synth oil until only recently.

This assumes that you don't drive like a looney.

My last Volvo used 10/40 Shell Helix for 70k miles and engine had virtually no wear at the last mot, according to emmissions tester.

I have used these in my present V50 2.0D, previous Volvo (V40 T4 with 250bhp), Seat Altea 2.0 Diesel, and other applications in the marine industry (my job). Never had any troubles. In my work, servicing showed minimal even less wear than when using Shell/BP/Castrol/Total, etc.

I use Millers XFD in mine - I think it's fully synthetic but about £25 for 5 litres at my local factors - been using it for 60k miles with no adverse affects.
