Default S40 Info

Hi all I'm new to the site, and I'm lookin for some info on the Volvo S40.

I'm looking to buy a S40 soon and just wondered if there's anything I should lookout for when viewing them?

Also I've heard that some use Mitsubishi engines and some use Volvo engine, which is the better engine to go for and how do I tell the difference between the Mitsi and Volvo engine's?

Thanks in advance

I've just noticed I think I've put this in the wrong sections as its the phrase 1 S40 I'm looking to get, could someone please move to the correct section

As far as I know the 1.8s I belive had the Mitsubishi engine (my dad had one), but that was the early S40's I think around mid to late 1990's

Hi, the S40 is a good all round family saloon, the 1.8ltr engine is reasonably quick and very quiet, when you go to view the car lift the bonnet, on the engine cover it will say either GDI or Volvo, my personal preference is the volvo engined 1.8 but having said that, if you read the posts relating to the GDI engine you will find many very happy S/V40 GDI owners who claim trouble free motoring and mileages in excess of 100k.
Check if the car has a comprehensive service history as this will go a long way to determine how the car has been looked after, if the mileage is around or past the 80,000k mark check to see if the timing belt and serpentine belt have been changed, if not be prepared to part with a large wad of cash to have it done.
Other than this look for any signs of accident repair work(overspray) and listen for any unusual knocks or rattles when the car is driven.

Hi Neil, try doing a search for the mitsubishi engine in the other S40 section, you will get loads of info there.
Welcome to the forum, even if it is the wrong section.
