Yes I can vouch for this. I have actually run out with 560 miles on the clock since refilling. I new I was low and also knew that the guage was pessimistic, but still thought that I could get to a garage. Car did go through the hesitate routine but stopped just short of the garage. Put a gallon in and it started first turn. I suspected that software was saving a bleed of the system.
SEcond time I thought I was running out, but didn't actually, was when going through channel tunnel. On M20 at Ashford, computer said I was empty and needed fuel. Gauge was not not even moving on to the red at this point. I decided to stop the car at the entry booth, my thinking being that if software doesn't allow car to start, then I'd rather fail here than when I'm on the train.
Fortunately car started and I went straight in for fuel in France. Interestingly,I only put in 43 ltrs, so obviously wasn't as empty as I thought.
Now I generally fill up after 400 and 460 miles.
