Good job OP on giving plenty of info about what is going on. Whilst I have not had this problem on a 940, I have had it with other vehicles, chiefly my Honda Blackbird (see below).

As already identified, the rectifier is almost certainly the culprit. With a broken one, you can get all sorts of exotic problems, lights and running issues which can be consfusing.

off topic blackbird story: It started showing off in all sorts of ways: lumpy running, lights on dash, periods of fineness etc. Twice, I replaced the stator, reg/rec and battery piece-meal and in very short order it was showing off and 'breaking' again. This is because any weak link in the triangle of charging components will harms the remaining 2.

The final fix was to replace all 3 items at once and hard wire them in, isolating the reg rec from its usual position on the frame with some standoffs to stop it shaking and getting so hot. Since doing that, no problem. replaciing things piece meal, it was sometimes dying within weeks! Very frustrating until it wasn't.
