I’d love to run a classic for work mileage but it’s the safety angle that firmly kills that for me. I do maybe up to 500-600 miles a week and with the current very poor standards of driving on motorways etc. I wouldn’t do that regularly without abs, dstc, airbags etc. and a strong passenger cell. Hence the oldest car I use is my 2003 c70 (occasionally) 90% of the time it’s in in my xc90 which I bought for that job.

With say an Amazon or even an older 240 or perhaps cortina or similar, they’d come off far worse in even a modest crash with a newer car - any newer car.

Remember this?

Probably need to define business use a bit more, and is it your own business or are you an employee?
My business use is sub 2k per year. It took quite a bit of negotiating to get out of having to follow the companies rules around the cars you could use for business use (sub 5 years, sub 150k, no coupes, convertibles etc) in order to escape the company car scheme, but I did finally manage it.
I've been using my 740 since June. I only do 1 or two business trips a month, longest so far 2hrs each way, usually about an hour.
Everyone who sees it loves it, it is a good "ice breaker' as it were.

As one of my colleagues said, if I turned up in my wife's V70XC, despite it being in good nick and the best motorway car by far, it's just another 'generic old car' and the perception may be that it is driven out of financial necessity, which for _some people_ can be an issue (i have met some!).
Turning up in something from the 80's or earlier, is clearly a deliberate choice.

If it's for (cough) business use have you looked at the tax implications? Perhaps a hybrid of some colour? Or an EV?

Tax is only relevant for company provided cars available for private use.

If someone opts out of that there is usually an allowance, say £6k to £10k - on which you pay tax like any other income.

Or no allowance but "use of personal car" mileage rates - i.e. 45p - which is expenses re-imbursement so not taxed (up to that amount).

45p/mile for the first 10,000 miles and then 25p/mile for any further miles, with the counter being reset at the start of each fiscal year.

As an IT contractor, if a contract ran for more than two years at one location, claiming mileage was also completely disallowed after two years.

yep, correct, paying any more is considered a taxable benefit

er… i wouldn’t agree with that, there are no “contractor” rules specific to it and after 2 years, it coul£ be argued that’s not temporary… i’m assuming you are referring to ir35?
Just my thoughts

I'm not referring directly to IR35. Them's is the rules without IR35, at least if you have your own limited company that employs you.
