Aluminium Tailgate
Hello all,
Probably one for Peter, I suspect, but here goes . . . The question of 740/760 tailgates came up in converstaion the other day, principally that at some stage production changed to aluminium construction. Certainly most late model cars seem to be free of the the usual Volvo tailgate rot; but that could simply be improved rustproofing. If anyone has the answer, I would be very grateful to know. Thanks for all and any help. T |

RE: Aluminium Tailgate
all the 700/900 estate cars came with alluminium tailgates.right from the beginning of production in 1985. as far as i know the reason was more to do with weight than rustproofing. although they never rust they do seem to suffer from electrolytic corrosion around the bottom end making the paint flake off sometimes

RE: Aluminium Tailgate
Correct, all 700 ad 900 estate tailgates are aluminum and all sunroofs. I have also been told that 960 bonnets are but not sure.

RE: Aluminium Tailgate
It is worth periodically adding a coat of Waxoyl of similar to the inner surfaces of the 700/900 estate's tailgate, especially at the bottom corners, around the washer jet hole and where the numberplate light/tailgate handle assembly fixes to the panel.
I did this to mine when I first bought the car in 2003, and to date, there is no corrosion at all. A repeat treatment will be carried out this year before the weather gets really bad :)

RE: Aluminium Tailgate
To avoid corrosion it is worthwhile ensuring that the number plate fixings are NOT steel screws directly into the tailgate. The differing metals cause the aluminium to corrode. Can overcome this by sticking number plate with adhesive pads (tend to lose their stick with time), make the fixing holes square and put in plastic inserts (there are several places on Volvos that use this fixing; so find a donor car) or, with trim panel removed use plastic nut and bolt number plate fixings.
PS for info: the facelift 760 and 960 have aluminium bonnets - weight saving as they are longer than the other models (bonnet goes right up to windscreen; no separate scuttle panel). |

RE: Aluminium Tailgate
The adhesive pads are superb- I have been using them to fix my number plates since June 2004 with no problems :)
