Default 740 GLE high idle and other problems

Dear Friends in this Forum,

First of all thanks for existing!!!

My problem that my '88 740 GLE with B230K engine needs some attention. The engine starts up fine and runs fine but as soon as I start driving the throttle keeps hanging and the car is idling at 2000 RPM. When I press and let go the accelerator fast it will go back to about 1100 RPM.

I have checked several things and I noticed that one of the levers on the carburettor is not going back to the original position. This also make a switch not go on or off (no idea).

Please have a look at www.gorpproductions.com/volvo/volvo.html to get an idea of what the problem is.

When this is fixed I will go to the next problem which is that the car loves to drive so much (320.000 km) that it does not want to stop. When I turn the ignition off it just keeps running like it's on one cilinder (dieseling) ....

Cheers,

Eddy

It will run on due to the fact that it is idling too fast, so the anti-dieseling valve is being bypassed. Try disconnecting the adjustable bar linking the throttle spindle to the carb. If that closes the gap adjust the bar down to suit.
Best of luck
Mike

The cable on the throttle spindle is slack and I can manually move the spindle but something is blocking the lever. It seems something within the carb is blocking it..... I cannot move it back to the original position, only by turning the throttle spindle fast and letting go fast.

The adjusting rod I'm refering to can be seen in the fourth picture below the cable to the right of cable. This might be holding spindle away from stop. Try disconnecting it (see last post) - let me know if that sorts it.

While checking what you told me I found out that the gasket between the carburettor and the manifold has been blown out!!!! I will replace this first and see what happens.

Thanks Mike
