Volvo xc90 won't start
Hi guys I'm new to the forum and could do with some help on fixing our beloved xc90 ...it's a 2004 and up until a couple of weeks ago it was good as gold. But sadly it's stopped working ..just cut out on the motorway and glided to a halt...the garage a Volvo specialist have said they can't work out was is wrong with it even after changing the fuel pump and injectors ....they have advised taking it to a diesel specialist but I'm not sure this is good advice as they have also said that they managed to get it running using some disc fluid direct into it. (Excuse me if that's not the right terminology a mechanic I am not)...my friend who is a mechanic is suggesting it's electrical and could be a crank shaft sensor ???? Any advise or help would be gratefully appreciated so we can get the old girl going again ...thanks G

To begin with, get some cheap diagnostics and start looking at which figures aren't correct like in this video...... and ditch the crook mechanics who take your money to change perfectly functioning parts on a guess.
You will never and I mean never need a full set of injectors to solve a D5 starting issue.

What he said - your mechanic is a crook.
Above is sound advice, other option is to check if you have an injector pulse whilst cranking - if not you have an electrical/sensor problem. If you do then its a fuel delivery/pressure issue.

I would suspect the tank pump is at fault, but you need the diagnosis to confirm, could even be the high pressure pump, I have know of those breaking the drive.

Is there fuel in the tank? Not just indicated, but actually in the tank.
There is a known issue with early models caused by the fuel level sensor fouling a baffle inside the fuel tank. This causes the fuel level to overead and you could have run out of fuel - ask me how I know!

Tannaton,
How do you check if you have an injector pulse whilst cranking? Do you mean an electrical pulse or a pulse of actual diesel. Good advice on checking fuel level/fuel delivery/fuses then diagnostic. Never heard of the injector pulse check but it seems another good idea. |

Typically the electrical pulse will be between 2 and 4 milliseconds long (0.002 to 0.004 seconds) for an average engine at normal operating temperatures. Generally, such pulses are viewed on an oscilloscope

Is car cranking at all??
If yes, spray some quick start to intake manifold. If runs obviously fuel issue. Undo supply line on high pressure pump. Crank again and look for fuel. In tank pump generates roughly 2bars so should spray fair amount of diesel. Got fuel supply? Yes- get diagnostic tool plugged in. No- change in tank fuel pump. |
