Default Volvo xc70 gearbox failure

Hi guys,
I have a 2002 Volvo xc70 2.5t with 100,000 miles; when the gearbox has warmed up it harshly clunks when shifting from the lower gears (1-2). What could the problem be and would I need a new gearbox?
Much appreciated.

Have you had the transmission serviced?

You could get the fluid changed to see if that helps (if it hasn't been done). If that doesn't work, you may need a rebuilt transmission.

I suggest you bring it to a gearbox specialist for their advice.

Hi, I appreciate your help.
The gearbox hasn't been serviced recently as I don't do many miles; How much would a gearbox rebuild cost also, I just spoke to a gearbox specialist over the phone and he believes that it may need a new Valve Body; is that a common failure of these gearboxes?
Thanks

Its worth speaking to the specialist to get an idea of cost from them (the one you spoke to).

Horton Cars (linked above) would check to see if the software is up-to-date first, that costs about £50. If that doesn't work, then they may try a transmission fluid service and add some lubricant to help with the harsh shifts (ask Horton how much that is). If that doesn't work, then they may advise it needs a new valve body, which would be around £1,500 easily.

As you can see, they'd start by doing the cheaper things first, as opposed to replacing the valve body straight away.

The only time you need a rebuilt transmission is if its lost drive completely or constantly slips gears. It doesn't sound like yours is at that stage. If it did need a rebuilt transmission, you'd be looking at £2,500 nowadays, plus the labour to fit it.

Get costings from the garage of your choice first. Its hard to give accurate figures. It would be much cheaper to give the transmission a service and check the software is up-to-date. Valve body replacement isn't cheap, nor is a rebuilt transmission. I don't think yours needs a rebuild, but I'm not a specialist. Don't take my word for it, speak to the experts!

Hi, I just spoke to Horton cars and essentially confirmed what you said; I'll definitely give them a try. Hopefully it's nothing to serious. Thanks
