Some interesting points, however I'm not convinced that "Daily Mail" type op-ed frothing is really applicable.

Pretty much all other Western European countries are similar in Tax take. If they don't get you at the pumps, they'll get it straight from your earnings, or with a higher VAT rate....

There's all sorts of other ways in which the Government gets their slice. In France for example (I know a bit about that because I lived there for a while not that long ago), the taxes on employment for businesses (i.e. Employers NIC for the UK) are huge in comparison with the UK. You yourself may not see as much deducted from your money, but as the Company is always paying a load - that translates into lower wages.

Again, in France fuel is cheaper than the UK, just don't forget you pay tax when you use the Peage. We always hear that "We have the most expensive Fuel in Europe" - an easy headline but from memory, fuel is more expensive in the Netherlands than the UK....

There are plenty of things wrong in this country, looking at PFI and the (mostly) dreadful state of our rail & road network. However complaining about the cost of things and the Tax take shouldn't be what life is about. Quality of Life is more important than the exact amount of cash in your pocket. Food for thought is that the nations that habitually top the Quality of Life indices are those where the Tax take is the highest.

aaaaand it looks like my S80 has gone up by a fiver this year. Not too bad.

...and I'm looking to emigrate.

I'm definately with you on this one, i've seen this country go completely down the skids in my 57 years, i'm off to the Czech Republic when i retire, cheap to live, great beer and the old get well looked after.

What I find strange is I manage to be in the top band for CO2, for my T6 (I think it will be eventually be around 400 quid ish), but I run it on LPG so ultimatly I preduce less CO2 than most cars on the road.

It doesnt seem to make sense if CO2 emmisions are the yard stick.....
