Hi everyone

I am about to buy an 850 2.5 CD but there is no reference to the amount of valves the engine has anywhere, this includes the V5 document. The seller doesn't know either but thinks it's 10 (possibly because he doesn't want to mis-represent the vehicle).

Now under the bonnet there is a sticker that says DOHC, call me old fashioned but a double cam in my experience with engines (which is a little limited) usually drives 4 valves per cylinder, am I correct?

Can anyone help

Thank you

It's almost certainly a 10V - the 20V had a plug cover saying so, and the twin cam simply means one cam drving inlet valves and one driving exhaust valves.

To confirm this, give the VIN no to your Volvo dealer and they will find out.

You are right that two cams are needed to drive 4 valves per cylinder, so it's more than likely a 20V.

My 850 actually has 20valve printed on the spark plug cover, but for some reason most of the ones I have seen just have DOHC ?

Unless I'm very much mistaken, my 10V 2.5 is DOHC.
Very nice motor is it too.

Another check:

Look at the engine code on the cam belt cover

B = Petrol 5 = cylinders 25 = 2.5 ltr 2 = valves per cylinder

so

B 5 25 2 = 2.5 Ltr 10V

B 5 25 4 = 2.5 Ltr 20V

B 5 23 4 T = 2.3 Ltr Turbo (T5)
