Auto box fluid level check procedure
Hair tearing out time!
Not having a handbook for my year 2000 V70 with the AW50 55SN auto gearbox, I'm having trouble checking the ATF fluid level. I managed to get the level spot on the cold mark on the dipstick but then when I dipped it at tickover after a 20 minute run, nothing showed on the dipstick. Switched off for 5 mins then fluid showed up towards the cold mark. Please could someone with a handbook covering the 5 speed AW50 55 auto 'box reply back to me with the word for word detail on checking the level. This would be much appreciated. Anybody know where I can get a handbook for a 2000 year V70 Classic, one of the last of the old shape. Thank you Martin |

Level should be checked with the engine running and gear lever in Park.
After a 20 minute run the level should be at the hot mark. |

In either case make sure the car is on very level ground before you start checking fluid levels.
Cold: Start the engine and go through each position on the selector lever holding it at each point for four or five seconds, return the lever to park and check the level using the COLD side of the dipstick with the engine running. Hot: The same as above using the HOT side of the dipstick, only use the hot side though after everything is fully up to temperature, typically 20 minutes at speed on the motorway for a cold engine is only just enough to fully warm everything up, I would tend to check this using the Hot side of the stick after a run of over 40 minutes. In either case don't go adding loads of fluid all in one go, a little at a time is the best approach, add some fluid of the correct type then run the selector lever through all its positions pausing at each one and recheck before adding more fluid, by the way my V70 is a late phase one with the same box as you have - Mike |
