Adjustment seems to be the key to handbrake performance and there's a few threads on here, but basically the handbrake cable must be fully slackened off with the adjuster before you adjust the shoes.

two types
Interesting. I didn't realise that there was two patterns of handbrake shoe, although I have read some threads about two different mechanisms fitted to Ph1 V70s. One was the original and the other is as fitted to Ph2 cars, although there seems not to be any particular cut off date for the changeover.

When my V70 failed the mot (at a MOT only garage) I had a local tyre place strip the drums off and sandpaper the inside of the drums and the shoe linings, clean and properly adjust them and went back an hour later to get my pass.

From the description of the "bang" it sounds definitely like one of the linings has come away from the shoe. This is something that needs immediate attention as it can jam and cause serious (expensive) damage - there are a couple of threads somewhere about this with graphic pictures of destroyed back plates!
