I've attached the operating instructions from the 2004 owners manual.

According to it, the sensor function shouldn't be operating unless you've intentionally activated it (they reset to 'off' when the car is stopped). Also, they should be off if the stalk is in the '0' position.

The upshot seems to be that you don't have intermittent wiping without it, if your vehicle has the sensor option fitted.

So does the ring adjust sensitivity or just do nothing with automatic? I think the mistake I've been making is leaving it in the on position

Yes, according to that manual excerpt, where the rain sensor option has been fitted the ring sets the sensitivity of that system. That's that same as with later models such as my own, which have the button on the stalk (with a green integral led) to enable/disable the auto function.

Default Auto wipers Not Efficient

I have a 2018 XC60 T5 and had two of the previous models before this. The auto-wipe sensing system is not as good as other premium makes. Just been out in showers and when I started out the screen was wet. Wipers did not come on for too long despite the sensor wheel turned to max. When they did come on they were OK until the shower stopped, when they decided to go at full speed! I turned them off. This example illustrates my experience with my XC 60's over the past 10 years.

That is pretty much exactly what mine do, the go on full as the rain stops, didn't know if I could disable the sensor to just give intermittent
