From what I understand, ball joint grease has a high shear handling property and is designed for high pressures, it is a bit gloopier than normal grease. 80g tube on eBay for £4 incl p&p http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370988592777 . It would be easier to remove the wishbone, that's not the time consuming part, greasing up and getting the spring clip on took the longest and I can imagine that would be twice as difficult in situ. Don't worry too much about your driveshaft, it won't fall out on its own, just don't pull it more than an inch away from the car!

The kit I bought from www.balljointboot.co.uk, is exactly the same as the one in your picture v40alex. Except it didn't come with grease sachets. We've got some old tubs of 'automotive grease' that claim to be suitable for cv joints etc so they'll either get that or some EP grease from a grease gun!
Now all I have to do is fit them!

Was that the Medium (Large Top Hole) one? About half way down this page...
http://www.balljointboot.co.uk/ball-...-diy-packs.php

I'm sure normal grease will be fine, but another property I read about Ball Joint/CV Grease is that it is more resistant to water ingress so helps to protect the joint when the covers are damaged. Not such a problem when you've got your new boots on but I think I can vouch for the original grease protecting mine

Yes I should have said its the 'medium - large top hole' although I reckon the standard medium may fit as well. Without measuring the tapered bit I can't be 100%. The boots have the code 09-153-6 on them (same as yours). I can see what you mean about the chunky lower spring retaining clip.

A job for this weekend. Probably just one side for now.

Track rod ends next but whether I do the boots or just replace the joint depends on how much a joint is.

Done ONE side today!
A couple of points came up.
1) You can't realistically do this job without at least removing the front bolt from the lower arm.
2) Once that bolt is loose there is a lot of movement at the wheel so if you don't get it back where it was you are going to have serious wheel alignment issues! Possibly this is what the VADIS procedure of re-tightening this bolt with the wheels on the ground is for?
3) How do you get access to this bolt with the wheels on the ground? I used an inspection pit but not everyone has those!

I am bit worried about the tracking which is why I tried to do this with the lower arm in place. My steering wheel is still centred so I'm hoping I got it back together properly.

Just ordered some new ball joint covers from Malcolm at http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/ - the dimensions of boot #4 appear to be identical to those described by v40alex.

I'll let you know how I make out. For what it's worth, Malcolm appears to be a very helpful chap to work with. These items are nowhere to be found here in Toronto, Canada but with the potential cost savings vs. new wishbones, not too concerned with the extra couple of pounds in postage.

Thanks for this, I've just had my MOT and they were asking for £335 to change these.

They also mention my Track Rod end Dust covers need replacing. Does anyone know where to get these from?

Many thanks,

Peter
