I agree through the cold winter if I accelerated hard I could hear the strange noise on gear changing when the gearbox oil warmed up it stopped. In the very cold weather I only accelerated gently for the first few minutes cos I did not like the sound of it. Have not heard it now the weather is warmer.

Thanks for the post though at least it takes a worry away. I think the aisin warner (toyota) gearbox used on the d5 is a strong one have seen no problems reported on the net. All problems were with the T6 GM box which was useless.

Could it be the torque convertor making the noise? Does it kick in just after the gear changes?

The noise is absent at higher speeds on the motorway. Does the autobox on the XC90 usually make this sort of noise and is there anything I should do/check?
This has now progressed to a squelching type of noise every time it changes gear and the gear change seems jerkier. Is there anything I can check myself like gearbox oil or is it a stealers job?

Default Noise update!

I have just returned from a month in Spain where the noise virtually disappeared the temperature was in the high 20's low 30's all the time however the noise started again as soon as I was back in the UK and I now think it is worse than ever.
I am going to put some pressure on the dealer now to sort - last time the mechanics said it was normal - can't believe that they build noises into cars!
Has anyone got any further information?
I want to go in "armed" if you know what I mean.

I have stated before that a software upgrade cured mine. TMS volvo said at the time it was something to do with a sensor. This was done 2 months ago and not come back. ?

Good luck

I'm waiting for a D5, so was able to compare the geartronic to the Citroen autobox in my C4 Picasso. The geartronic is superior IMHO.
I hesitate to put this on here, but it sounds very similar to problems I have had with the Citroen semi-auto box, either in flappy paddle mode or full auto.
When cold there is a sharp snatch on changing gear, the 'bite' point seems to have been lost from the computer memory. Now I thought that was garbage, more likely to do with oil levels etc, until the mechanics reset the system with their computers - suddenly smooth changes. I got fed up with regular trips to the dealer to reteach the box; they taught me the following which re-educates the clutch/gearbox to the bite point.
From cold drive on a level surface at a max of 5mph, brake to a stop. Accelerate to 5mph, brake, repeat 4 times. When stopped for the fourth time switch off the engine, remove the key and lock the car. Pause. Start the engine, select auto and drive off. The bite should be smooth and the gear changes improved; supposedly the box has adjusted to your driving style.

I know, it sounds like rubbish, but it works and has saved me from driving the car into the showroom and walking away. Try it, it may just help.

Default Thank you Britsud & TMS Hinckley

I have had the problem of the rubbing / vibration on gearchanges and took your advice by contacting the service manager at TMS he gave me the download code to rectify the issue which was duly done by Harratts in Huddersfield.
Car now running perfectly and a joy to drive. Very grateful for the advice.

Does anyone know what the download code was that solved this problem?

I can confirm that mine was fixed by a gearbox software update at the stealers.
