The input tube feeds a manifold, from which eight flat channels run to the far end. All the channels at the far end are connected to a single manifold (so far as I can tell, it's a single manifold). There are then ten flat channels that return to a manifold the feeds the output tube. All the flow is axial flow along the channels. (Except for what goes on in the manifold at the far end.) Thus there is essentially no convection going on. The new matrix is different in appearance and looks as if it has just one manifold on each end. |

The new one is more conventional in design, the old one appears to be in effect, two joined together.
I'd go with the flow in the top, return from the bottom theory if i was doing it, the return going to the long pipe under the exhaust manifold and into the back of the water pump.
