Default Exhaust question removing silencer box

My friend has a v70 t5 same year as my v70r he has ask for the silencer to be removed and replaced with a pipe I understand that back pressure is not as important on a charged intake car I think it will be to loud am I correct I know he wants it louder but doesn't want to spend hundreds of pounds on a replacement exhaust system I personally think he's crazy as the exhaust is not in bad condition has anyone done this if so how did it go lol

Default Removing exhaust box

You should remove the centre box, not the rear one.

As a rule on a petrol forced induction engine the further back you fit just one box the more effective it is.

Hi Don

I have had a look under the car and definitely has only one silencer fitted huge thing then the cat at the front and a pipe out the silencer to the rear

To be honest removing the sound deadening is a bigger undertaking than you imagine and there is masses of fibreglass fibres in there... plus it's a case of cutting open and rewelding 20 odd year old, dirty, rusty nasty stainless steel.... And even when you've done that it'll probably rattle from inside the empty box and not forgetting that the tube inside the box is perforated so the gas flow will be ruined also....

Or, as you say, 'cut the box out' is also not so straightforward as where the exhaust tube goes in and comes out of the box the tube is oval, the box has the exhaust hangers on and the stainless steel will be well rusty there also... And, and even if you did get there and were successful it will just fail its mot anyway as you aren't allowed to modify the exhaust any more...

I have done both ways and although it got the desired noise the effort was not worth it, to the point that when I got hold of another standard exhaust it was bliss to drive it quiet
