Default Very helpful all of you.

Garage has now decided that it is more likely to be water pump than block - it seems to me that if it were frost damage (a) it should have manifested earlier in the year and (b) the water pump would have acted like a freeze plug.

So step 1 is for garage to put in new water pump (from Volvo but pattern with cast impeller) - I think owner may do it himself this time to make sure the well known issues with the rubber seals on top and at rear are avoided).

If there is still a problem I will get her trailered (£60) to one or the other of local garages that owe me favours for fresh diagnosis.

If it does turn out to be block then yes I agree B230FK and either swap the whole head with Garrett or just the A cam (I think it is an A cam, or maybe hunt for a VX3) and probably keep the ET manifold for simplicity and anyway 90+ manifolds are almost all cracked by now - and are swines to get well welded. And then an MBC.

Yes the ET should run nice petrol (4 star) and I usually do, so that might be the limiting factor for overboost.

I'll be back.

Cancel the Volvo water pump and INSIST on an SKF pump - much better quality and less likely to fail a few months down the road!

Bit concerned at the apparent guesswork going on at that garage though.

Default Hooray!

It did indeed turn out to be the waterpump! And the Volvo pattern one that arrived looked quite tasty to me, cast impeller and all. Test drive maybe later. The thought process of the mecco who actually did the job first was perfectly logical, I went right through it with him, and he even seemed to know about stress concentration factors.

But I will probably need fresh turbo-to-downpipe studs - they are the reason the turbo tends to wiggle loose (a well known problem) and they HAVE to be Volvo, so I will put them in stock for next time. Dratted shame that it's a turbo-off job to change the studs though. Parts a fiver, labour loadsamoney!

Text steps will be to put dye in to find out where the aircon is leaking - and I may have to get custom aircon pipes made, the 940 ones I have do not fit (as I rather suspected) oh and to get a proper Volvo thermostat to help the heater keep me warm over winter.

I've had a huge list of bits done at the same time so I now await a very grown up William (big bill). And after a week or so I can see if the 17 mpg has improved! And the intercooler was OK after all so I have a spare now in stock for future reference.

Today is a GOOD day!

I might be wrong Mark but i think main dealers only supply the genuine Chinese Volvo pumps these days, you have to search elsewhere for the SKF pumps.

Funnily enough you can buy direct from SKF. Think my one was around 70 euro's. Same pump form SKF is availacbvle on the plethora of car spares websites online for £35 ?????

The genuine Volvo one had made in the UK on it ???

All very strange
