Can I repair a Slip Ring, Steering Wheel, Angle Sensor?
Hi have taken my steering wheel sensor off my V70 2006 D5. As its giving an error on the dash.
Does anyone know what actually wears out or goes wrong with a steering wheel sensor? I've seen a video clip of one being opened up so wonder whether its just an issue of cleaning come contacts? Part No: 30669744 They seem very expensive secondhand and even more eye watering for a new one! Thanks Richard. |

Usual cautions about airbags. Remove battery ten minutes before starting work etc.
We had ours done prior to buying the car. It gave intermittent error codes so the dealer replaced it. We've had no issues since. I still have the old one of you wanted to pick it apart and try cleaning it up. PM me if you do.

The sensor must the 'rotated' into the correct position prior to install. I haven't looked inside one, but I'm guessing it's mostly a mechanical/electric contacts. I've read of one owner who installed it wrongly - the steering was not at center. He removed, centered everything and the sensor worked fine. If your car has DTSC (lower center console button), these systems can get confused if the front wheels are off alignment causing the steering wheel to stay slightly off center when driving in a straight line
Also new sensors come with a small 'locking' screw so the sensors won't rotate prior to install. This screw must be removed prior to install, some owners overlook this and the new sensor may get damaged

hi rik, what mileage is yours at, i had a similar failure with the SAS, after replacing the part with a new volvo one (yes expensive as you say) i believe you have to do a quick calibrate with vida, i guess to register full scale movement each way and 'centre' , i did take the old one to bits but cant remember what i found ill see if i have some pics of the innards if yiur interested..

Yes, I believe I do know what fails. The ribbon is soldered to a small board at the very end. I think it’s only visible if you unwind. The solder is what fails over time. DIYer beware, I’ve unwound one and 2 days of cursing later I still could not rewind it properly. I was able to plug it back into car to test though and I did fix it! Thing is, my poor rewinding job unfixed it!
