Volvo V60 2012 D4 Sports / Performance Brakes
Hello there fellow Volvo owners.
Can any of you please provide me with recommendations on front and rear sport / performance brakes for my Volvo V60 2012 D4, it just seems to lack a little bit in stopping power so would like to beef that up a bit and can't seem to find too much online. As always thanks in advance :-) |

I have standard brakes on the D5 and they seem to stop me quicker than my tyres will allow..
Brake swap..

My V60 is over two years old and has covered just over 30,000 miles, with the same pads and disc's and the brakes are perfect.
Plenty of stopping power. tem.

I mean don't get me wrong, the brakes of course do work but my other car is an r-line golf and in comparison to that the brakes feel soft. I know it's not apples and apples but for me I would prefer it if my Volvo could brake a bit quicker.
So if anyone can recommend some slightly beefier brakes it would be awesome. |

What make of discs and pads are currently fitted?
What's your disc and pad thickness? Is everything clean and free moving? When was your fluid last completely renewed?

Again I will have to check in the morning for thickness but as I have just bought the car I put it in for a full service including full fluid replacements for everything including the brakes so they are definitely clean etc. The thickness was not brought to my attention during this so would imagine they are within operating range but I can of course take a look at the report in the morning. |

Brake feel can be down to several factors and the extra bite you want may just as easily be achieved with some softer pads and new flexi hoses...... Who knows?
I'm doing a brake upgrade myself using XC90 / Police brakes but it's not because my brakes are no good, in fact I'd say Volvo brakes are generally excellent. I'm just having the upgrade because I got a good deal and they'll look better.

Looks fine to me for brake efficiency. Only way to really tell is compare against someone else, or ask volvo dealership what is optimum/expected for the car with that brake spec.

If you haven't replaced your brake fluid I would do that first. I have a 2011 S60 with (I assume) stock brakes and I would never call it spongy or soft, or at least no more than any other car of this generation designed to accommodate grannys with weak ankles. It is more than happy to pull up quickly without much pedal input.
If nothing is wrong with the car but you are after a firmer pedal like out of an old fashioned sports car you might struggle, there is a lot if trickery between your foot and the pads. I've been told Volvo have twin redundant brake systems with the safety system plugged into one of them so if it goes belly up you can still stop. If you play with things too much it might cause problems for the stability control system. Your car is 4 years old, if the brakes have been cooked the fluid could have gone bad. Replace that first and see if it helps, pads are the next step and drilled/slotted rotors will make a big difference. Volvo already (I believe) use hard walled brake lines across the range so that old trick won't help. Be aware if you get "sports" pads they tend to be more abrasive and will eat into your rotors faster. |
