Default To Take Or Not To Take A Free 70 142s

Hi! Guy's

My name is Jeff. I'm new to the group. I've owned two Volvo in my family. 1st was a 77 244DL & the 2nd a 85 245 turbo. Both were good cars. Now I have a chance to get a 70 142s for free. The 1st owner will just give it to me. The car has a little 100,000 miles. I was last driven 2001 sitting ever since then. Car is straight ,but has rot in both 1/4 panel & driver front fender. But the kicker is he said he always had a problem with a vapor lock -overheat since new. He said the car woild have this problem alot when he would drive than park it for a little while. Than if he wanted to hop in a go he had to let the car sit awhile then he could start it and go. One person told me added a fuel pressure regular will solve the problem. But I don't know. So my question is what do you guys think? Plus I'd appreciate any help with info on these cars. I've been a GM Guy all my live so with these Volvos I'm flying with blinders. So any help would be great!!!!
Thank You
Jeff

I think that the 142 is one of the best looking cars ever made by Volvo. They are very rare over here in the UK, in fact I have only ever seen one on the road. Assuming your car has a carb, the first thing that springs to mind would be a heat shield between the carb and the exhaust, to prevent the fuel evaporating.
I have done a quick search of this site, and the only answer to this problem was to ensure the diaphragm in the stomberg carb was intact, as the tiniest hole in it would enrichen the mixture to the extent that you would be trying to start a warm engine on full choke.
The only other thing that I know to do with a 'gassed-up' car, is to start it with the gas pedal flat to the floor until it fires. Hope this is of some use...
