Default V70 1.6 diesel 5th gear whine

Hi all

I have a 60 plate 1.6 drivE with just over 150k on the clock.

A couple of months ago, a whine started off in 5th gear. It stops when the clutch is depressed or out of gear.

Having read a few posts with similar sounding issues, the general consensus is to start by changing the oil in the gearbox. The only problem is, I cannot find out which type of gearbox I have fitted to enable me to by the correct fluid.

The handbook does not mention the 1.6 engine or gear box AT ALL and the vin on my motor seems to contain a combination of letters and numbers not known to any of the sites that supposedly tell you how to de-cypher the VIN.

Any help of suggestions welcomed.

I'd ask a Volvo dealer or Volvo specialist. Having said that, a member will probably pop up with the answer.

It's a Ford gearbox, but there was a 5 speed until fitted up until 2010 and then a 6 speed unit thereafter. I think the 5 speed was the MTX75 gearbox and the 6 speed either the MMT5 or B66.

In any case I would use something like Comma MVMTF Plus. If it had a fancy oil in from the factory, it would be for economy reasons.

Some of the Ford boxes did whine in top after say 100k miles, but you usually get another 150k out of them before they've had enough....
