Finally, I plucked up the courage to fit the net to my wife's car. Gulp! All of the following is after receiving invaluable help from Raddish who was very helpful in answering the many questions that I had and provided the Volvo part numbers to use as well as putting up his photos and being the first to fit the net. I'm posting this only because I used a different tool to Raddish.
The answer to a question that you will ask yourself if you plan to do this is that as far as I am aware the panel, which covers the battery, where the net fits is not available to buy as a separate item but has to purchased as part of the whole left boot trim. With that in mind, my recommend advice is fit, mark, remove, fit, check and double-check at every stage of this.

The tools that I used were:-
masking tape
pen or pencil
sharp craft knife
drill and 5mm wood bit
Dremel tool(other makes are just as good)
Dremel High Speed Cutter 192 which is apparently 4.8mm wide

1. Using Raddish's method I did a dummy fit of the net and placed masking tape in the areas where the clips would go. Initially, you are tempted to position the bottom bar further forward but this will take the clips too close to the sloped area of the panel and you will not be able to twist them to lock them in. Also, as the panel slopes away if you locate the bottom of the net on the slope you are making the pocket shallower and less practical.

2. I used the Dremel and cutter to make the initial hole and then turned the panel over and cut out a slot over the hole for the clip to fit in. I used the craft knife to get flat to the back of the panel and trim off the burred edges of the hole. Be careful that you cut the slot 90degs to the final position of the clip. Apart from the initial pilot hole all cutting and trimming was done to the back of the panel.

3. The two rear clips will also require a locator hole for each which is where the ends of the metal frame will fit. I used the drill for these holes.

4. Fit the first clip and slot in the net to be certain of the other rear clip position. I started with the top left clip, as you look at it, as it's the most out of sight and is not so obvious if you make a mess of it. The rest of the slots become easier as you gain confidence and improve your method as you go. Cut the second slot and hole.

5. I then clipped the net in place and marked again where I wanted the bottom clips.

6. I then started on the left bottom clip, again using the cutter to make an initial hole and then turn the panel over to slowly cut away a slot. I fitted the clip and again refitted the net so as to double-check the marked positions of the last two clips.

7. Carry on and cut and fit the last two clips. It's as you cut the bottom clips that you begin to see why you can't position the net as far forward as you would probably like.

8. Fit the net in place and be happy that it's all in place.

9. Put it back in the car and relax!
