V70 D5 '13 plate engine oil
Hi all, any advice on which engine oil is best to use for the above? My dash message is telling me I need to add 500ml..
There seem to be several that meet the specs as stated in the handbook, but they are so different in price I feel they must differ in quality? I've seen references to a "Volvo 95200377" in a couple of places, but can't find any references to it in the handbook. Don't know what's in it at present as the service was carried out before I bought it. Confused.com AG |

Do yourself/yourcar a favour and change the oil and oil filter, because you don't know what's inside and how long. Oil must follow Volvo specification: 95200377 Which is: ACEA A5/B5, API SL, SAE 0W-30. Volvo recommends Castrol Edge Professional -> Castrol EDGE Professional A5/B5 0W-30. Other oils will be OK, but must be ACEA A5/B5, API SL, SAE 0W-30 (or you can have problems with DPF). Beware, there are many 0W-30 oils, but not all are ACEA A5/B5.

You can use what brand of oil you want. Its the A5/B5 spec that matters most. 0W30 is overkill in this climate.

You MAY be right about 5W30 vs 0W30. So, THE WHOLE post is "Not true"? How much money do you save on every (yearly?) oil change? How many years and miles did you use 5W30 and never had a problem? Which engines? If I bought 6 liters of 5W30 instead of 0W30 I'd save about 30 quid a year, so don't want to risk it. Here is what the Owner's Manual for MY 2013 says.

I've been thinking of changing to 5W30 because of the "chart" in the handbook, like you say the UK isn't that cold, and driving through France/Spain during the summer is crazy hot.

Lets be clear, you can use 0W30 A5/B5 oil and have a problem with the DPF If the car isn't driven properly on longer journeys every so often (as diesel's require), the dpf can still clog up (even using 0w30). In the UK, 5w30 A5/B5 spec is absolutely fine according to my handbook for my engine and its cheaper than 0w30. Between the two Volvo's (an S80 & V70), both are 5 cylinder diesels, it saves approximately £60-70 per year (depending on prices) using 5w30 instead of 0w30. Mileage wise (between the two cars) around 15,000 per year and we've owned the cars for 4/5 years. So it may not seem like much of a saving, but between two cars over 4/5 years, it adds up. DPF issues generally arise because people are using diesel engines to do very short journeys and excess soot builds up. Although, DPF trouble can also be caused by sensor issues in the engine/exhaust.

Well, the devil is in the details here, surely. Very confusing if you try to investigate the whole thing about the minuscule, but maybe very important differences between 0W and 5W oils... That's why I don't take engine oil risk which such a great car. You shoud have also highlighted "SAE 0W-30" because that is the only thing not clear here when in connection to local winter climate. I live in an area where temps drop down to -10 C in the last years, not nearly so often as before when it was more often to drop even lower in winter (global warming...). From what I've read it seems that 0W oils are typically (or always?) fully synthetic? But, it could be that 5W oils are not all synthetic, hence the significantly lower price. Do you know if the A5/B5 - 5W30 oil you are using is fully synthetic or it is a blend between Group III base oils which are highly refined mineral oils and Group IV base oils, known as polyalphaolefins (PAOs), which are fully synthetic? Can you tell us which oil? Thanks.

You live in a different location. Your car, as per your owner's manual takes 0w30 only. Mine, like the original poster of this thread, takes 0w30 A5/B5, but can also take different viscosities of oil so long as its A5/B5 spec (as specified in the handbook). Yours doesn't... you have one option for oil and nothing else. The oil I use is 5w30 A5/B5 spec, usually Mobil or Petronas. Both say "fully synthetic" on the bottle. Links below show the ones I use. I got them cheaper than that though. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-90011-s...riantid=143621 https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-218905-...riantid=354674 Its also my understanding that not all 5w oils are fully synthetic. It depends which brand you buy, it seems. The ones I get are fully synthetic, like 0w30 oils.

( the gauge takes over 20 miles to re-configure itself.) it is always easier to add a bit more than take some out.. Volvo UK have always recommended Castrol EDGE Professional A5/B5 0W-30 for your engine. It is very simple .. You always get personal opinions from people on forums who have no qualifications in Oil technology thinking they know best and confusing the question asker even more !
