I know you say the car is at a garage now to find out what's wrong. Is this garage an engine specialist or a Volvo specialist? If its just some "ordinary" place, they won't be equipped to deal with these cars. You need a specialist.

He's not a Volvo specialist, but I've used him for 5 years. He helped build my Clio track car. I trust him and his skills.

If he can't diagnose the problem I'll contact the specialists again that have been recommended.

I have emailed both as I know how busy people are and phone calls in the middle of something is a pain.

Thanks

Being honest, you're probably best phoning. Emails end up in junk folders and spam folders. You can't beat a phone call.

The mechanics rarely answer the phones in these places, there's reception staff for that.

Such a shame.

I thought it had a new cam belt?

both garages recommended are very good . a good s/h head is the cheapest option for a repair like this as a new one will cost more than the value of the car hallmark would be my first choice for this work .dont sell for breaking as you would be lucky to get £1000

If you can find one, then you have to take a gamble on your camshafts. In some cases you find the lobes have actually rotated on the shaft in the impact. Not necessarily visible but enough for it not to run correctly. The recon heads from the specialist include camshafts so you just know it will be right. But yes you’re looking at about £1000 for head and cams.

Sounds like aux belt caused it or something wasn’t assembled correctly……

What difference will that make? The engine is toast.

Because it would help not only the OP, but also the forum members that have been asked for help, to determine what may have caused the apparently catastrophic engine damage.
