Thanks for all the feedback.
My small can of 3in1 oil sitting on my garage shelf seems to be working well.

Do not know what oil is in my carb's but I believe they need topping up. Decided to use ATF, should I drain out the remaining old oil before using ATF and if so how? Thanks for advise/comments.

Personally I would not bother but if you want to do it get a syringe from the vets and put a bit of small tube on the end of it

Forum; ATF works just fine for me, but in a pinch, I find Marvel Mystery is also acceptable because of the similar viscosity.

bT; To remove/replace unknown existing Damping Oil, remove Air Filters and Damping Valve Assemblies (not absolutely necessary, but it gives better access for disassembly and cleaning), remove Domes (lift away along axis), then lift away Dashpot (carefully, also along axis, so as not to damage Metering Needles), and pour old damping oil from reservoir onto a clean, white paper towel to allow inspection of color and viscosity. During disassembly, do not mix components of the two, without good reason.

While apart, and you are familiarizing yourself with your (wonderful) SUs, and before reassembly, a general cleaning, inspection, and lubing is a very good idea. See: http://www.sw-em.com/SU%20Carb%20Service.htm Reassembly is as they say, the reverse of disassembly.

Good Hunting!

Hi all, back in the day(when ah wor a laad) it was always 3 in 1 for SU dashpots. Fill so that when inserting the valve there should be about 1/4" gap from top of dashpot to bottom of thread when the valve is just touching the top of the oil.
Those new fangled Strombergs hadn't arrived on the scene yet, cheers,JDmac.

This is one of those age old questions for anyone with an SU or similar.
SU state SAE20 - which I use.
I also have some SAE30, if I'm not happy with 20, but that's only cos it's dead cheap form Toolstation.

I use ATF in my stromberg and it gets sucked out so I just tap it up. Should I use a thicker oil?
Also I was told the oil should lubricate the carb but judging by your replies it´s not it´s function.

Exactly - the oil for SU's is one of the few things Volvo got wrong

It is time for a new diaphram in the carb most likely
