Just to come back to this I have for now had an improvement, Vida had a code for open circuit on glow plug 5, cleaning the contacts up on the relay/glow plug has made the error go away and the car starts much better - although still a bit of unburnt diesel coming out the back it's now an amount I can live with + no more rough idle.

Hi Thanks for letting us know,
Did you test glow plug No5 with a ohm meter to see what it was reading,
Dave

To be honest no I didn't test it as I changed all 5 for brand new ones in November or December. I'll try and test it at some point on the weekend and see if its as good as the others.

Just wanted to come back and hopefully give a "final" update on this.

After last post I did an ohm test on 5 and it was fine, same reading as 4 and 3.

But the problems came back over easter and now Vida reported plugs 2 and 5 as open circuit. Without checking anything else I bit the bullet and ordered a new relay.

Relay came, fitted, still open on 2 and 5. Sigh. Multimeter out and start from the beginning. Plugs 2 and 5 both now failed an ohm test. Went and bought 2 new plugs to replace. Good news is now all plugs work fine, car starts much better.

Being an inquisitive type I decided to cut the old relay open to see whats in there - and wow they have moved on a bit. Anyway what I can see from looking at the board is plugs 2 and 5 share the same voltage regulator. 1,3 and 4 each have their own.

In summary I suspect the voltage regulator has gone bad in the relay. Fix = new relay.
