Default Signs of a failing turbo?

Folks,

The car is a 1999 T5 with the fly by wire throttle which was replaced 30k miles ago and has done 150K in total.

Occasionally when accelerating I am getting what I can only describe as a pause for a few seconds and then it carries on as if nothing has happened for a few days and then does it again. Its not the usual turbo lag. The car is a keeper so I dont mind spending a few bob to keep it running

I am assuming as there are no error messages, the problem must be mechanical rather than electrical ie the turbo?

The car has just been serviced and it still does it. The mechanic has also noticed the problem and says wait until I get an error code and take it from there.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before and was it the turbo or something else.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards Brian.

Hi Brian

When it pauses, does it keep running but loses power? Or does it cut out completely?
Is the speedo behaving normally?

I think I had occasional loss of power, accompanied by erratic speedo, when the ABS module electrics went wrong (in a 1999 T5). ABS module is a fairly common fault.

I don't think it threw any codes, but I can't be sure.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Steve,

Thanks,

It loses power, it doesn't cut out. The speedo looks to be functioning ok, but I will keep an eye on it.

Sounds similar to a fault I had, turned out to be some split vacuum lines on the turbo, was months ago now so cant remember exactly which ones though.

The Boost control solenoid and 3 pipes coming off it are a good place to start looking.
If it's still running the original boost control pipes they will be marked red, blue & yellow on them.
Red one goes from compressor on turbo to valve.
Yellow one goes to the wastegate on turbo to valve.
Blue one goes from valve to the plastic air intake between airbox and turbo inlet.
The boost valve can get lazy/sluggish with age.
