Default Mounting a mobile phone in the cabin

Whats the best place for a mobile phone for sat nav?

my screen ones and dash grabbing ones dont fit anymore, im looking ofr either a air intake one (never liked these as they bend downwards or can damage grills) or stick it in front of my auto gearknob and have a magnet there.

They also have a cd drive mount but i dont know if it will damage it?

I never use my cd player and have one of these in my V70. It works a treat, matches my trim, doesn't block anything and is actually well made and not a piece of everyday Chinese tat

Default magnetic one works

I got a magnetic one for £6 from Sainsbury's fitted on the air vent too the right of the steering wheel next too the drivers door. Came with two large stick on disks and although sceptical I thought I try it for the price as I struggled to find anything to fit neatly. Works a treat the magnet is strong enough to hold the phone without it falling off every time you hit a pothole. (& there is enough of them) Yet not overly strong that you take it all out of the vent when picking up your phone helped by a good grip vent holder.

I put a small lump of blue tack just above the hazard light switch and sit my iPhone 6+ (marked in blue) sideways on top of the ridge above the CD player. It's a cheap option and works for me. Being in the middle it also allows my passenger - if there is one - to tell me when the next turn will be coming up.

I've used your photo Pete so you can see the ocation and yes it does cover the hazard light switch but if I have to turn that on I'm not going anywhere anyway.

While I don't have a current use for an additional nav device on my XC70, on other cars where I needed to fit something I looked long and hard at the problem and came to the conclusion that if you have to actually look at the device while driving, it should be mounted as near your line of sight on the road ahead without actually blocking any of that line of sight. By experimenting I found that a suction holder fitted to the lower right corner of the windscreen placed the device in an area where it only covered the view of the bonnet and not any aspect of the road. It also meant that it was nearest my right hand to operate it and all this could be done without taking my eyes off the road. Even the fitted Volvo sat nav forces you to look away from the road and I can see a definite advantage of the older pop up system. If you only use the audio instructions from the phone system, it doesn't matter where it's mounted so long as you can reach it if you need to.

I use a TomTom purely for speed camera announcements because the Volvo unit will not allow tailored announcements for POIs and I prefer to be told what the camera is rather than just a stock bleep. I keep it in the central stowage completely out of sight. It turns on with the ignition and announces impending cameras without me seeing it and without cluttering up the cabin.

I have a Brodit Proclip mounted over the front right center air vent, which holds my iPhone using google maps, which is ideal.

Doesn't get in the way of the windscreen and close enough to glance at now/then

I have a window suction holder with wireless charging on the far right of the windscreen above the vent. Used to have it in the middle of the screen but seemingly that is illegal. I hide the wire in the door seal.

I would also recommend the brodie pro clip. Had it in a previous car and even after an accident, the phone was still in its holder. Its in my current car, slightly pricy but in my opinion the best.

Another vote for Brodit Proclip ( but use a different phone holder as I have a phone cover) but I use the version that clips onto the A pillar so sits to your right at eye height. I then have a long charge cable that is pushed into the groove from centre console all the way to the right of the wheel so it’s more or less out of sight. Brodit is not the cheapest but deffo the best.

Hi,

Brodit ProClip on the center vent. Along with a Brodit phone holder.

But I would check the Swedish site for the correct part number if going for an angled clip for the vent on the right of the steering wheel as the british supplier habitually sends out the wrong item!
