Around 3kW to 6kW, depending on vehicle size

(4hp to 8hp for those living in the past and still using horses)

In the handbook it says that the A/C is 'subdued' with the roof down ...I took that to mean it's switched off. Never tested it TBH as I turn it off (along with the fan) anyway with the roof down ;-)

Subdued really seems to sum it up... it does still blow (hot or cold as appropriate) but not as strong

I only have mine on when it's hot. I find the D5 doesn't accelerate nearly as well when the A/C is switched on.

Having said that, my old BMW air con was working up until a few years ago. Had it re-gassed now it works for a week before giving up again. I think perhaps that was a lack of use and now a seal has failed somewhere.

Nice to see so many people use th air con as intended, and use auto. It's not just nice and cold on hot days but nice to have conditioned air all year round much more comfortable driving.

I personally could not have a car without it, it packed up on my last car and I could not fix it quick enough. Took some time finding the fault, sensor in the evaporator.

Always on auto in all our cars. I mean, why even think of switching it off?!

Saying that, wife’s old -99 Civic was a manual system and truly sapped all the power that little 1.5 had so only on when needed. The 780 system is always on but as mechanical do sap a lot of power and its really noticable! My guess is that ot looses 10-15bhp

New cars use electrical systems and is hardly noticable.

How do electrical AC compressors work, I would have thought an electric compressor saps more power than a clutched pulley running off a belt?

The electrical power has to come from somewhere, and I would suspect the mechanical load of the compressor is transfered to the altinator.
Wether an electrical system uses less power I don't know. Certainly manufactures are changing to electric power steering to save power, only draws power when needed no recirculation of fluid.

I have no idea. Could well be that they in fact take similar power. But I remember reading about it way back. Manufacturers were changing to electrical systems to save fuel etc etc etc. Whether true or not....
