2004 XC70 D5 awd

Hello, after i have replaced my four drop links i aim now for the front and rear sway bars. Correct me if im wrong. On the rear one we can change the bush, but on the front you have to change the entire sway bar if its the factory one? Is it the front one and easy medium or hard job to do?

I havent found any to buy, you guys have any idea and what kind? Im on a budget so nothing that goes over board.

Some people say that they are bonded to the bar and you have to burn them off, is this correct ?

They may have been bonded once. One of them was free. Cut it lengthways with an old carving knife and it was off in a heartbeat. The other was not free but it peeled off the bar with moderate finger pressure leaving no residue on the bar. Car has 187k now so maybe the glue gave up.
A dab of grease on the knife makes it much easier to cut the bush. I split the new ones on the longitudinal seam at the flat part of the D.

The front ones can be done without dropping the subframe. However, it is not an easy job.

Be careful what you put in there. Removing the bar is a rather tricky task, and you don't want to do it twice. Aftermarket bushings are most of the time low quality and may get torn even before one year, and the bar will start knocking worst than it's now doing. Unless you have an advisory, or your are sure the bar it's knocking, I'd leave it for now. That's for the front bar.

Indeed, ideally it would be to replace it with the one from Volvo. Aftermarket poly bushes are not all good (people reported cheaper one being gone after 1 year) and need be greased each year. Rubber bushes if they are good may last longer but won't be vulcanized to the bar as were the Volvo original ones. Being vulcanized is not that critical however may allow the bar to 'walk' laterally (reason why Volvo did vulcanize them. But you may weld a washer on the side of the bush or use a bar clamp (looks like this http://jksmfg.com/i-20765384-tj-jk-s...clamp-kit.html)

Side note, on my 2003 S60 the bracket over the bush is welded together (can't split open the two sections of it).

Another point referring to the DIY without dropping the subframe: the bolts securing the bracket over the bush are very hard to turn all the way until they come out and they are quite long. Definitely not a wrench job. A ratchet with a long handle (or an extension) is a must.
