Thermostat - No air release valve?! Is it supposed to have o
Hi everyone,
I have a thermostat here for a 940 but it doesn't have an air release valve at the top, certainly looks well made apart from that though. Its a new old stock thermostat from a company called Ring Thermostats. I thought they come with air release valves though? I have ordered a new one from volvo just to be on the safe side. Are they supposed to have an air release valve? Engine is B230FT Cheers! Yoda960 |

When you say an air release valve, I presume you mean the little 'toggle' of metal that is usually in the outer ring.
I've had them with and without that, and they have all worked fine. I think it's just different designs and manufacturers.

I wouldnt touch RING products with a barge pole .. especialy a vital part like a thermostat which could wreck your engine ..

No not ring thermostats , but RING electrical equipment , lighting .. over the last 20 years or so , lowest quality ... eg spot lights lasting just over a year before rusting out ..

Well this Ring thermostat I have here is new but old stock, the phone number on the box is even in the old format with just 4 digits for the area code. I don't think ring make thermostats any more. In fact i've just had a very close look at it and I can make out the word 'motorad' so they must have made the thermostats for 'ring'. Certainly doesn't look shoddy, i'll pop it in and keep a close eye on temp.

If there is no toggle drill a small hole. It needs it for the system to bleed so you can actually re fill with coolant

if you do drill one make it smaller than 1/8 of an inch as even that size hole will add to the warm up time, the little toggle is fitted to allow air to pass while topping up but on startup it closes

Thanks for the advice chaps, I had a bit of doubt in my mind so decided to buy a Volvo one instead i.e. with the toggle already there
