It is the O/D that counts, as you just push it into the outlet of the cooler and the outer edges make the seal. You should also get a short (5cm) length of garden hose to use as an adapter on the end of the return hose (that you removed from the cooler) to fit a funnel. Use this to add fluid.
Hi, so I need 15mm OD hose, I will have a look for some.

You talk about adding fluid back in to the return line but should it not be done via the fill port on top of the gear box?

What you really need is a washing machine tube...

Like this one:

Works like charme.

Have you used this on the later xc90 (2007 and above) on the 6 speed auto?

That's 19mm thought we need 15mm?

This tube or hose fits perfectly on the outside of the cooler (this doesn't sound right in my ear languagewise, I'll better explain further ).

The hose with the smaller diameter is to push inside the connection on the cooler. With the rubber on the washing machine hose, you do it the other way, you push it over the connection...

Tbh, it wasn't my idea, but it works just great. Look here:
https://youtu.be/-DxEmb-2s2A?t=301 (starts at 5:01, were you can see the hose). At 5:14, you see what I'm trying to explain in my bad english (sorry).

EDIT: the rubber in the washing machine hose is more like a universal adapter

Hi guys, ok so about to start ordering some bits.

Every thing seems good but just need to check the OD of the hose, I have been looking on the net and every one states diffrent sizes grrrr.

So I know mine is a P2 so the gearbox flow has been changed so I need to disconnect the top line and bot the bottom, this way requires me to insert the pipe into the cooler.

Is this 15mm and any one have a link?

I know I have had response but just want to confirm before I get bits ready.

Hi CPU Man

This is the next job on my list, never tried before. Mine's a 2013 so if you don't mind to share any tips especially the hoses you used that would be appreciated.

Plan to follow this method:

The washing machine hose is an excellent idea but please remember that you do not have this gearbox fitted. The hose will still work fine on yours though.

He was refilling via the dipstick tube and you don't have one.

You will have to remove the Aircleaner box and unplug the ECU's on top of it to get at the gearbox fill plug. Additionally the method for checking fluid level is different on the 6 speed box with no dipstick.

Very straightforward still but make sure that you get the correct oil.

JWS 3309 used in the video is the correct oil for that car and also for my 2007 XC90 but your car uses a different spec oil.

Worthwhile doing and not hard but just make sure you check the correct procedure for your model year car.

Good luck.

Im certain that the washing machine hose end will be a standard size and don't forget it is soft rubber so will stretch over the outlet giving a good seal.

This is the method that I prefer on the 6 speed auto but I always do a couple of hundred miles between each sump dump.

The Gibbons method with the hose is only slightly different.

Either method is superior to leaving filthy oil in the gearbox.

I'm thinking about doing this as I can't find anything in the service book to say its been done.

Can anyone tell me where the gearbox dipstick is? I can't seem to locate it.
