The noise is always when the car has stood still over night or parked up for a while.
I was thinking gearbox release bearing but my mechanic said the gearbox/clutch is fine.

Similar to DaveNP, very occasionally when releasing the clutch there is a similar light squeaking noise as the clutch bites. It’s only for a second as the clutch release passes a certain point. Has been doing it for a long time but no problems, YET, although now suspect clutch is dragging a bit as have occasional 1st gear selection problems when at a standstill. Car has done 220,000 miles so things are a bit worn on mine.

Now I dont like this lad..

No car deserves this kind of disrespect.

And especially one that is well capable of going for million miles..

I had a similar noise on a 240:~ mainly as you changed gear, it turned out to be a worn clutch that allowed the rivets to touch the tops of the fly wheel bolts.
Clutch changed and problem went with it!

It could last years yet! I won't right it off it just yet. But the prices are very expensive here in Sweden.
The salt roads doesn't help with loosening nuts and bolts.

Cost of repairs and possibly many more years of life, against possible highly inconvenient breakdown and cost of replacement vehicle.
